There were a few things I really like about taking this course that were different from other online courses I have taken in the past. The first thing is that I never got to do a blog in any other of my online classes. It felt kind of cool to have your own website that you could put your ideas on and that wa nice. The other thing I liked is being able to view other people's ideas on their blog. This was fun because you got to see a wide range of opinions on one subject. This creates a unique learning experience. Now to the things that could use some work.
I felt liek a lot of the assignments were very repetitive. All of the projects we had to do were about concept application. After doing a couple of the papers I felt like I had to try really hard not to repeat information i had in another assignment. Grading the journals was also something nthat didn't really fit for me. While it is interesting to grade the journals as we are sort of switching roles form student to professor, this is something that got fairly repetitive as well and really didn't feel like it enhanced my learning experience.

I too felt the assignments were slightly repetitive, but I also definitely felt that way even more in my comm. 157 class. I think since each class has an overall theme to it by midway through a semester or so the assignments are going to feel a lot like "been there, done that" sort of.
ReplyDeleteAnd I also agree regarding grading the journals. It was fun and interesting to read everyone's experiences and such, and my group's were a great read, but by grading the like third one the grading process was getting repetitive. I have a new found respect for all of my professors who have to grade the same assignment 20+ times.
And I also liked the idea of having our own website, posting blogs, reading and commenting on other's blogs too - it felt very Myspace-esque.
I also felt like the assignments started to become repetitive. As I wrote my blogs about concepts from the week's chapters and used the concepts in my papers, I had to try very hard that my papers were not starting to sound the same. I think this may also be because I have taken all my communications classes within the past two semesters for my minor and these concepts come up frequently in class discussions. I thought it was kind of different to grade the journals. I wasn't a fan, because I didn't like having to read all the journals that were on the same sort of topic. All the journals were very different surprisingly.
ReplyDeleteHi jrmCOMM105--
ReplyDeleteI think that as the course was entitled Comm, Self, and Society, my expectations were slightly different than what I ended up finding in the class. I felt that the class focused a bit too much on society and not enough on the self in terms of the class layout. I would've liked more reflections about ourselves as communicators rather than having all of our assignments focused on the societal communications.
But I think that the journal grading definitely helped me appreciate the grading process! As an aspiring teacher, I now have a better idea what I'm in for -- no wonder teachers seem so tired all the time!
